Editor: At the Northeast Pennsylvania Economic Forum hosted by The Times-Tribune, Jerry Joyce suggested the federal stimulus package presented a unique opportunity for a transformational project.

If our entire region adopted as its number-one priority the reinstitution of passenger rail service from Scranton through the Poconos to New York City, the propitious alignment we enjoy in our elected officials could make this project a reality soon. Mr. Joyce’s suggestion received the general concurrence of the roundtable participants.

Accordingly, the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce has adopted the request, formulated by attorney Larry Malski, director of the NEPA Rail Authority, and is forwarding it to Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. Arlen Specter and Bob
Casey, Congressmen Paul Kanjorski and Chris Carney and Gov. Ed Rendell.

We ask all who favor the rail passenger link to contact these leaders, adding their support to the effort.
