A local wheat and flour mill and the natural gas industry helped produce a record year for the regional freight railroad system that runs in Lackawanna and Monroe counties. The growth will require adding new tracks between Scranton and Carbondale to store freight cars.

The Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad Co. carried a record 8,572 carloads of goods across the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority’s system, according to authority figures.
That surpassed the 2014 record of 8,048 carloads and marked a 31.4 percent increase over 2016 when the system carried 6,526 carloads.
